Radio Control System AN/ARW-19, AN/ARW-20, AN/ARW-21, AN/ARW-22
Please let me know if you have a copy of AN16-30ARW19-3
"Navy Department Handbook of Maintenance and Instructions for Radio
Transmitting Sets AN/ARW-19, AN/ARW-19X, AN/ARW-21, AN/ARW-21X and Radio
Receiving Sets AN/ARW-20, AN/ARW-20X, AN/ARW-22, AN/ARW-22X", published
under authority of the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of the Bureau of
Aeronautics, approved December 1, 1948
This is evidently a WW2-era remote control system used for aircraft and
missiles. Doolittle Radio Inc. (previously Doolittle & Falknor) of Chicago
IL was the manufacturer. This company evidently made low-band AM police
radio equipment that was adapted for remote control use.
- The GORGON TV-guided missile used this system as it has the ARW-22
receiver installed. This was previously Navy type RAY-3 and is evidently
equivalent to the Doolittle PR6N. Here is the GORGON
page.
- The RAY receiver (Doolittle PR3N) spec sheet is shown below.
- RAY-5 (Doolittle PR7NA or AN/ARW-20) photos are shown below (thanks to a
post here)
- The type GS transmitter is the CDF-52163 - 20w, A2 & A3, 23-28
Mc.
- The ARW-19 transmitter was previously known as Navy Type GS-5 and is
similar to the Doolittle GWY-1.
Photos are shown below (thanks to John W7KEZ).
- A GWY-2A transmitter is shown below (thanks to G3VKM posting here)
- Info from WA5CAB I think-
From CO-NAVAER 08-5Q-227, September 1945:
GS-2, -3, -4, -5.
Supersonic radio control transmitting equipment,
similar to each other except for frequency range
and operating voltage.
Used with RAY-2, -3, -4, -5 receivers.
See AN/ARW-19, -20, -21.
- Here is a US Patent which uses the
AN/ARW-19 transmitter, AN/ARW-22 receiver, and a "supersonic
selector" as part of the system.
Partial schematics of these equipments are shown as Figures 11 and 12.
This system uses the MD-27 modulator of the ARW-19 transmitter to create 10
supersonic tones (20kc - 120kc) which is used to modulate an ARC-1
transmitter. At the receiving end, the ARC-1 receiver feeds the AF section
of an ARW-20 receiver to decode the 10 tones in its SE-10 selector section
(which appears to be a separate box).
