Identification Info from Robert Downs WA5CAB - "Of course, it can be difficult to impossible to ID a TCS receiver (or transmitter) as to exactly which numerical model it was originally. However, there are various clues that will narrow down the possibilities. For example, if it has round-tipped posts at each front panel corner, and/or if removing the front panel from the chassis requires either cutting or desoldering the power connector, it is TCS through TCS-5. And given that TCS-1, -2 & -3 all or most went to Russia, and, the original TCS had no nameplate and TCS-4 would be rarer, it’s probably TCS-5. If it has handles on the front panel (or the holes for them) and removing two screws frees the connector from the front panel, it is TCS-6 through 15. That plus has trimmer capacitors in the IF and BFO transformers, it is TCS-6 or -7. If it has all Phillips head screws on the front panel, it is either Stewart Warner or Collins. If the audio output or modulation transformer doesn’t say Collins, it isn’t Collins. So handles, Phillips head screws and air core IF’s makes it a TCS-7. Etc. & so forth." |
